José Luis Olaizola comes from San Sebastián. In his extensive literary career he has won many awards including the Ateneo de Sevilla prize in 1976 for his novel Planicio and the 1983 Premio Planeta for La guerra del general Escobar, recently acclaimed by both Álvaro Mutis and Javier Cercas as the “best Spanish novel about the Spanish Civil War.” In 1982 he won the Barco de Vapor Prize for his novel Cucho whose French translation won the Grand Prix de l’Académie des Lecteurs de Paris.
